About Vega

Vega Sicilia is unequivocally Spain’s most prestigious wine estate — the reference for Spanish fine wine and one of the world’s most extreme practitioners of long-aged red wine production. The estate, established in 1864 in the high-altitude Ribera del Duero plateau, produces wines from Tempranillo (“Tinto Fino” locally) blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and small amounts of Merlot/Malbec. The flagship Único is aged for an average of 10 years in oak before release (the longest oak aging of any major fine wine) and only in declared vintages. Reserva Especial is a multi-vintage blend of older Únicos. Valbuena 5º is the second wine (5-year aging). The Álvarez family’s holdings extend to Alion (same region, modern style) and Pintia (Toro DO). Bodegas Vega Sicilia also owns Tokaji Oremus in Hungary and several other international properties. Despite the scale of Único’s reputation, total annual production across all labels is modest — Único itself is produced in only ~50,000 bottles per release.

Editorial notes

Practical guidance

Único release timing varies dramatically — some vintages are released 10 years after harvest, others 12-15 years. The 1962, 1968, 1970, 1986, 1990, 1996, 2004 are legendary vintages. Modern wines age 15-25+ years easily.
