Tinta Roriz
The Portuguese name for Tempranillo. Key grape in Vintage Port blends (alongside Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca) and serious Douro DOC reds.
About Tinta
Tinta Roriz is the Portuguese name for the grape known elsewhere as Tempranillo — the same Vitis vinifera variety expressed through Portuguese terroir and winemaking traditions. The grape is one of the principal varieties in Vintage Port blends, where it provides structure and aging potential alongside Touriga Nacional (the most aromatic grape) and Touriga Franca (the workhorse blending variety). Tinta Roriz also produces serious unfortified Douro DOC red wines — the region’s 2000s-era pivot from fortified-only to dry-table-wine production has elevated the variety’s editorial position. In southern Portugal’s Alentejo region, the same grape appears under yet another name — Aragonêů — emphasizing the variety’s deep integration into Iberian viticulture. The naming complexity is editorially significant: a single grape variety appears under at least five different names (Tempranillo, Tinto Fino, Tinta del País, Tinta Roriz, Aragonêů) across Spain and Portugal alone.

Editorial notes
Same grape as Tempranillo — but Portuguese expression differs editorially. Tinta Roriz from the Douro’s schist terroir produces a distinctive wine character even though the variety is genetically identical to Spanish Tempranillo.
